What’s Near By

The town of Watlington is situated at the foot of the Chiltern hills just 3 miles from Junction 6 on the M40 motorway. Watlington has the title of Smallest Town in England and was first recorded in 880AD. There are many buildings still surviving, being inhabited and used for business from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries.

The famous ‘White Mark’, (after which the campsite is named) is a triangular shape carved into the chalky hillside above Watlington in 1764, it is supposed to resemble an extension to the church tower (making it into a steeple) when viewed from the Oxford Road.

Red Kites were introduced to this part of the Chiltern hills in 1989 and have successfully bred so that there are now approximately 1000 breeding pairs. The birds can be seen soaring above the hills and campsite. Keep an eye on your BBQ!! The birds will swoop down for any unguarded food and will snatch it from your hand. Please do not intentionally feed the birds. The Conservation Group want them to spread as there are too many in a concentrated space.

Watlington today is a thriving town with several small shops including Co-op supermarket, butchers, cafe, delicatessen, library, gift shops etc. ,  a fruit and veg market 3 days a week, visiting fresh fish van 1 day a week.   For dining we have fish & chips (Kingfisher), Indian restaurant/takeaway (House of Spice) and 3 pubs all serving food to different standards, 1 serving oven wood-fired Pizza (Spire & Spoke), 1 Chinese (The Chequers) and the other traditional English fayre (Fat Fox). Another pub (Fox & Hounds) at the top of the hill behind the campsite is ideal to visit whilst you are out for a walk! Sample menus are available in Reception.

On the edge of the town is an outdoor green gym, skate park, children’s play park and playing fields.

The Ridgeway Trail/Icknield Way runs alongside the campsite and makes a great start for a gentle walk or if you want something more energetic you can head off up into the hills. Walk maps are available in Reception.
